There are MIDI presets replicating a range of playing styles, each with its own sub-library of fills. The real highlight here is the extensive and flexible library of MIDI grooves. There’s a per-channel mixer with compressor included, to help adjust levels further. In terms of sounds, you’re limited to just a sampled acoustic kit here, although the sounds themselves have been well recorded and pre-processed in order to cut through a mix. Unlike some of the more electronic or synthetic tools in this list, Power Drumkit 2 is a plugin aimed squarely at replicating the realistic sound of a real musician behind a genuine drum kit. In reality, the hardware that inspires these plugins is fairly limited - you can’t even tune a real 808 kick - but Synsonic has ramped up the flexibility significantly with a variety of parameters absent from the originals. While a one-track drum plugin might not sound all that useful on paper, it’s worth bearing in mind that between them those two bass drums underpin entire genres, from house and techno to hip-hop, so having access to speciality tools dedicated to shaping the perfect emulation is nothing to scoff at. However, even with PC based authorization, iLok still add a system driver that is always loaded and that could still cause problems with some peoples' setup. I hope that all companies using iLok will move to PC based authorization, then this type of authorization process will become similar to CR authorization used by Waves, IK Multimedia, etc. Antares still use dongle authorization only.
But not every plugins maker have switched to PC based authorization. Side note: just a few weeks after I bought KawaiExPro, Acoustic Samples (maker of KawaiExPro) started to allow PC based iLok authorization, no iLok USB dongle required. Note that I still prefer to buy non iLok plugins but now that I have it, I don't automatically dismiss the idea.
And now that I have it, I will sometime buy iLok protected plugins since I already have the dongle.
Although I "hate" iLok (for technical and moral reasons) and I resisted getting anything protected by it, there was one VST plugin I REALLY wanted (KawaiExPro piano library) and it uses the UVI platform protected by iLok, so I had to buy an iLok dongle for that. It's a marketing tool to get people to invest in iloks, so they will consider purchasing other plugins when they have the ilok.
